CBF's annual donation to the Key West Challenge

    Last updated 1 year ago

Community Bank of Florida is proud to support the 2013 Shell Key West Challenge Fishing Tournament. This year's event will take place April 25th through 28th.  Since its inception in 1989, the tournament has provided an opportunity for anglers to gather together for three days of competitive fishing in the beautiful Florida Keys. Each year the tournament raises thousands of dollars for charities. Over the years, more than $2 million in contributions have been made to the Mental Health Association and over $475,000 has been given to the Diabetes Research Institute.

The Shell Key West Challenge was the brainchild of Jo and Hayden Blaylock, of Blaylock Oil Company in Homestead, Florida. The two decided to create an event as a fundraiser for the National Mental Health Association. Jo was the driving force behind the fundraising elements of the tournament and when she lost a long and valiant battle with cancer in 1998, the tournament had reached the $1 million mark in total contributions.

When Hayden’s grandson Matthew was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes seven years ago, the family decided to use the Shell Key West Challenge to help the Diabetes Research Institute continue its efforts to search for a cure through cellular transplant therapy. In 2009, the Shell Key West Challenge was given permanent recognition at the DRI as a way of thanking the Blaylock-Sanchez family and executives from Shell Oil.

CBF's St. Vincent de Paul Donation

    Last updated 1 year ago

Community Bank of Florida was pleased to make a donation supporting the upcoming fundraiser dinner hosted by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and the Knights of Columbus. The dinner will be held on April 13, 2013 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Parish Hall and will include a silent auction. Funds raised will go towards feeding and assisting those in need in our community. In the past year, the local Society of St. Vincent de Paul has assisted over 250 families by offering emergency assistance and referrals of other resources available to them.  These services help families stay together and prevent them from being separated from their loved ones.

About the Society: Vincent de Paul was a priest of the Catholic Church who dedicated himself to serving the poor. In 1845, the St. Vincent de Paul Society was formed and named after the patron saint with a mission of helping others. Today members of the Society are from all walks of life, but share one thing in common- the blessings they have (time, talent or treasure) are to be shared with those in need.

Sacred Heart Catholic Church is located at 106 S.E. 1st Drive in Homestead. For more information about the fundraiser, or about the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, please contact Donna Silva, at 305-248-2142.
